Delhi Pollution: AQI Still in 'Severe' Category, Air Quality Worsens Due to Road Traffic Congestion on New Year Day 2020

New Delhi, January 2: There seems to be no respite for people living in the national capital as the air continues to remain very toxic and in the severe zone for the last couple of days. According to Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) data, Air Quality Index (AQI) was at 418, which was in the 'severe' category in Anand Vihar, at 426 also falling in 'severe' category in RK Puram, the scene was no different, where the AQI was at 457 in 'severe' category in Rohini.
According to reports, road traffic congestion in the city on New Year’s Eve might have contributed to the worsening air quality on Wednesday despite favourable meteorological conditions for the dispersion of pollutants. The AQI for a day in between had turned 'very poor', but on the following day, again it was in the 'severe' zone. An AQI between 0-50 is considered "good", 51-100 "satisfactory", 101-200 "moderate", 201-300 "poor", 301-400 "very poor" and 401-500 "severe". An AQI above 500 falls in the "severe-plus" category.
