The New Delhi Municipal Council runs around 31 schools in the national capital. Last week, the NDMC had issued a circular mentioning that the move aims to enhance ‘enrolment’ and ‘public perception of schools’. The council has already approved the proposal. “The civic agency resolved to change the names of 31 schools after the late former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The notification in this regard has already been issued and thus the name of Nagar Palika will be considered changed from this financial year (2019-20) only,” mentioned a circular issued to all departments.

According to reports, MP Meenaksi Lekhi also said that the council had received multiple requests for the schools to be renamed after the late and former prime minister. Lekkhi further added that 'Atalji's life is worth emulating for the students. Meanwhile, NDMC's education director RP Gupta was quoted in reports saying that the move has been taken to increase enrolment and improve the public perception about the municipal schools. Gupta added saying that a resolution was passed to change the names of all the Nagar Palika Schools to Atal Adarsh Vidyalala from the 2019-20 academic sessions.
