In a bizarre case, a 36-year-old man from Seemapuri in Delhi, who accidentally swallowed a toothbrush while cleaning his throat on the advice of a charlatan, had it removed by the doctors at the AIIMS through a non-surgical procedure.
New Delhi, January 3: In a bizarre incident, a 36-year-old man from Seemapuri in Delhi, who accidentally swallowed a toothbrush while cleaning his throat on the advice of a charlatan, had it removed by the doctors at the All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) through a non-surgical procedure. On December 8, Avid had accidentally swallowed the brush when he was cleaning his throat. He didn't tell anyone about the incident but the next morning when he started feeling pain in his stomach he was taken to the nearest hospital. Even after he was admitted, he didn't reveal that he had swallowed a toothbrush.

As the local hospital didn't have a facility for performing endoscopy, he was referred to AIIMS. Avid was transferred to the emergency room where doctors again performed a CT scan to check whether the foreign object had caused any rupture in the internal organs and also to check whether it had moved to intestines. But the test revealed that that the object is still in the abdomen.
On December 10, a gastroenterologist pulled out toothbrush by performing endoscopy. As it was a non-surgical process, Avid was discharged on the same day.
It is not the first instance, in September, doctors in China had removed an 8-inch long spoon from the abdomen of a man who had swallowed it accidentally a year ago. In August, an Indian boy had a cough that squeaked, later, doctors removed a toy whistle which was lodged in his throats. In both the instances, the implements were successfully removed.
