Delhi Heatwave: National Capital Reels Under Severe Heat, Mercury Likely to Hit 47-Degree Mark in Coming Days

New Delhi, May 31: Heatwave conditions continued to grip the national capital as the highest temperature reached 44.7 degrees Celsius on Friday, which is several notches above the season's average. The weather agency further informed that severe heatwave conditions will prevail in the national capital during the next 24 hours. ON Thursday, the IMD had warned ‘heat wave’ to ‘severe heat wave’ conditions will prevail with the maximum temperature likely to touch 46-47 degrees C at isolated pockets. According to reports, the Safdarjung Observatory recorded a day temperature of 44.7 degrees C, four notches above the season’s average on Thursday. During the day, several areas in Delhi experienced heat wave conditions where the day temperature touched 46 degrees at Palam and Aya Nagar. Areas including Palam and Aya Nagar recorded 46.8 degrees C. According to a report by Hindustan Times, the peak power demand in Delhi touched 6240 MW, which is the highest this summer so far. The high demand is majorly because of increased use of air-conditioners and water coolers.
Delhi is expected to receive good amount of rain much before the south-west monsoon arrives, owing to "strong" pre-monsoon activities in northern India. However, the temperature is set to increase in the coming days due to heatwave conditions in parts of Delhi-NCR. People are advised to keep themselves hydrated and stay indoors when the sun is at its peak.
