New Delhi, December 30: As many as 500 flights have been delayed and 21 others have been diverted due to dense fog and low visibility. According to a tweet by ANI, apart from the delay and cancellations, five flights have been cancelled so far due to dense fog at Delhi's IGI airport. Earlier in the day, officials at the Delhi Airport informed that 16 flights were diverted and 4 flights cancelled at Delhi airport. On Monday, dense fog and cold wave conditions continued to engulf the national capital with Lodhi Road recording a minimum temperature of 2.2 degrees and Aya Nagar at 2.5 degrees.
The national capital and and its surrounding areas were enveloped in a thick blanket of fog, reducing the visibility and affecting air traffic and vehicular movement. The Northern Railway stated that as many as 30 trains were running late due to low visibility.
Thick fog was witnessed at cantonment area and a minimum temperature of 2.5°C was recorded in the national capital on December 29. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the minimum temperature recorded at the Safdarjung observatory was 2.6 degrees Celsius), Palam at 2.9 degress Celsius and Lodhi Road 2.2 at degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, the Air quality index (AQI) in the capital was 449 with particulate matter (PM) 2.5.
North India has been reeling under severe cold wave conditions since the last week. Parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan saw a dip in mercury levels. Amritsar city in Punjab recorded 1.2 degrees Celsius while Ludhiana and Patiala registered a minimum temperature of 4.6 and 4.5 degrees Celsius, respectively. In Haryana, Ambala saw a minimum temperature of 2.7 degrees Celsius.
In Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar recorded the coldest night of the season with temperatures dropping to minus 6.5 degrees Celsius while Drass in the Union Territory of Ladakh was freezing as the mercury dipped to minus 28.8 degrees Celsius.
