Delhi Air Pollution: Schools in Delhi-NCR Reopen Today As Air Quality Improves to ‘Moderate’ Category

New Delhi, November 18: All schools inDelhi-NCR reopened on Monday after the Supreme Court ordered schools to remain closed till November 15. All schools in the national capital were closed on November 14-15 (Thursday & Friday) as pollution in the city hovered close to 'emergency' levels. On Monday, the air quality in Delhi improved significantly and was in the “moderate” category. As per the air quality index (AQI) data by Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), RK Puram is at 184 - in 'Moderate' categoryon Monday. Meanwhile, the AQI at ITO is at 215 - in 'Poor' category this morning.
The national capital was engulfed in a thick smog for four consecutive days till Friday. On November 13, the top Court had also advised people to avoid outdoor exposure and work from home wherever feasible. Apart from the closure of schools, the Environment Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority also extended the ban on hot-mix plants and stone-crushers in Delhi-NCR till November 15. Moreover, the Court had also banned construction and demolition activities in the region till further orders on November 4. On Sunday, Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 29 degree Celsius and minimum temperature of 16.2 degrees Celsius. On Saturday, the satellite cities of the national capital also saw significant improvement in the air quality with some having Air Quality Index (AQI) in the “moderate” category. According to reports, the air quality in Delhi-NCR is expected to remain in the “moderate” and “poor” categories for the next two days.
In the wake of the rising air pollution levels, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has repeatedly blamed both Haryana and Punjab governments for the toxic smog that has blanketed Delhi and its adjoining regions as a result of the burning of crop residue in the two states.
