New Delhi, July 25: In a major rescue, the Delhi Commission for Women rescued the 16 girls brought from Nepal for trafficking to Gulf countries, just in time. According to media reports, the girls were to be trafficked in the wee hours of Wednesday.
As per media report, Swati Maliwal, chief of the Delhi Commission for Women, got a tip-off about the trafficking of 16 girls. She then informed the Commission's team which called police and reached Munirka area in South West Delhi, where the girls were reportedly confined.
When the police and the Commission's team reached the spot, they found 16 girls, as mentioned in the tip-off, in a small room. The report also mentions that the passports of the girls were taken away by the traffickers. The traffickers had brought the girls to Delhi, on the pretext of providing employment to them.
The DCW chief was quoted by media report saying that the 16 girls were brought from Nepal on the pretext of employment. She also added that the girls were confined in a small room and the traffickers were to send the girls to Gulf nations. In a shocking claim, the DCW chief claimed that around 15 days ago, several girls were sent to Gulf by the same traffickers.
DCW's chief Maliwal also expressed concerns over the police being unaware about the presence of such a racket, especially when the nearest police station is located just 500 metres away from the room. She also demanded that accountability of the police be set so as to avoid such incidents by trafficking rackets in the future.
