New Delhi, May 10: A group of burglars broke into a house in Delhi's Mayur Vihar Phase 1 and assaulted an elderly man before leaving with some gold jewellery. The burglary took place in the early hours of Thursday and the victim was identified as 101-year-old Vishin. Burglars used an iron rod to attack Vishin. His bed-ridden wife Poonam Dhanrajani was also threatened by burglars.
According to Vishin, burglars attacked him when he went to the hallway to check on the noise. "They hit me on the head with a rod and I fell. I pleaded with them to let me go. They threatened to take my eyes out if I did not tell them where the money was," the elderly man was quoted by The Indian Express as saying. Burglars ransacked the entire house before fleeing, he said. Woman Arrested, Minor Son Apprehended for Killing Elderly Couple in Southeast Delhi.
Poonam said the men entered the bedroom and demanded money and jewellery from her. "They wanted gold and cash. I told them we are retired pensioners and don’t have anything. They took away my gold necklace after threatening me with a knife,” she said. After burglars fled, injured Vishin somehow got up and cried for help from a window.
Neighbours rushed the elderly couple to a hospital and informed the police. "We received a PCR call around 2 am. By then, the couple had already been rushed to a hospital by their neighbour. We are investigating the matter and looking for footage to identify the accused," Jasmeet Singh, DCP East Delhi, said. The couple was unsure what things were stolen, said Singh.
The couple lives alone and their two sons live in the US. "Their sons told us there was nothing expensive in the house. The couple was not been able to tell us what was stolen," a police officer said.
