New Delhi, July 23: Terrorist David Headley, who has been convicted for his role in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, is in a critical condition after being assaulted by two inmates in the jail in US where he is lodged since 2016.

Headley was reportedly attacked by two inmates at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago on July 8. The attackers, whose identities are yet to be confirmed, are two brothers who are serving a prison term for attacking an on-duty police personnel nearly a decade-ago.

Following the assault, Headley was rushed to the North Evanston hospital, where he was put under intensive care unit. Despite a fortnight's treatment, his condition has not improved.

As per the latest reports emerging, Headley is still battling for life and is kept under 24/7 observation of the critical care unit.

Headley's role in the 2008 Mumbai terror strikes, which claimed over 150 civilian lives and left nearly 350 injured, was established during the probe conducted by the Mumbai Anti-Terror Squad.

In February 2016, he deposed via video conference before a Mumbai court explaining how he was used by the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba to plan the extremist attack in Mumbai.

A US Court, taking cognizance of the evidence collected by the Indian agencies, had sentenced him to 35 years in prison.

Headley, who was born as Daood Sayed Gilani in Washington, is a son of a Pakistani diplomat and news broadcaster. In 2006, he visited Pakistan and got in touch with LeT handlers. During this phase, he was radicalised and recruited as a handler for the Hafiz Saeed-led outfit.
