Delhi, December 28: The Tis Hazari Court on Saturday, December 28, postponed the bail plea of 15 people in connection with a violent protest against the new Citizenship (Amendment) Act in Delhi's Daryaganj area. The next hearing in the matter will be on January 7. The 15 accused were arrested after a clash between the police and anti-CAA protesters on December 20. During the hearing of the bail petition, the Additional Public Persecutor said that the accused were involved in a criminal conspiracy as a result of which a car was burnt, stones were pelted and police officer assaulted.
Countering APP's argument, Siddharth Agrawal informed the court that the case under IPC section 436 (mischief done with an intent to destroy) is not made against the 15 people.
The accused were arrested after violence broke out in Daryaganj area on December 20 when a group of agitating protestors resorted to stone-pelting when police tried to forcibly evict them. In the melee, one car was set on fire and several others were damaged.
The protests were against the Citizenship Amendment Act which grants Indian citizenship to six religious communities- Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Parsis and Christian- except Muslims from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan who entered India before 2015 and faced religious prosecution in their country.
