Cyclone Warning in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu Coast in Next 72 Hours; Fishermen Advised Against Venturing Into Sea From December 14

A newly formed depression in the southeast Bay of Bengal is expected to develop into a tropical cyclone in the next 12 hours and threaten parts of eastern India by this weekend.

Chennai, December 13: A newly formed depression in the southeast Bay of Bengal is expected to develop into a tropical cyclone in the next 12 hours and threaten parts of eastern India by this weekend. Due to this influence, rain will start from December 15 onwards while the heavy rainfall and strong winds are expected in the southern Coastal Andhra Pradesh and north Tamil Nadu. Fishermen venturing into the sea are advised to return back by December 14. Cyclone Gaja Wreaks Havoc in Tamil Nadu, Claims 33 Lives

Hyma Rao from Cyclone warning centre in Visakhapatnam told ANI that, "Yesterday well-marked low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal intensified into a depression and centred about 1330 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam. It's likely to intensify into a deep depression in next 12 hrs and cyclone in subsequent 24 hrs." Chennai: School, Colleges to Remain Shut Amid Heavy Rain Prediction.

He further added, "Due to this influence, rain will start from 15th December onwards with heavy fall at one or two places and strong winds will also start from 15th. Due to these factors, fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea from 14th Dec onwards."

This would be the second storm to hit the southern states within a period of 30 days. Earlier last month, nearly 12 districts of Tamil Nadu were severely hit by cyclone Gaja which claimed lives of around 46 people. The cyclone had also uprooted hundreds of trees, electric poles across several places. Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu CM Palaniswamy announced Rs 10 lakh compensation to the kin of decreased.
