Cyclone Vayu: Odisha offers help to Gujarat As 'Very Severe Cyclonic Storm' Will Make Landfall on Thursday

As Cyclone Vayu is likely to make landfall in Gujarat on Thursday, Odisha government on Wednesday offered help to the western state, which has launched a mass evacuation to shift over three lakh people from low-lying areas of Kutch and Saurashtra regions.

New Delhi, June 12: As Cyclone Vayu is likely to make landfall in Gujarat on Thursday, Odisha government on Wednesday offered help to the western state, which has launched a mass evacuation to shift over three lakh people from low-lying areas of Kutch and Saurashtra regions. Gujarat Chief Secretary today called up up his Odisha counterpart AP Padhi and sought advice on how to tackle the cyclonic storm. "Gujarat chief secretary had called me up and discussed the measures to be taken ahead of the landfall. We have offered all kinds of help to Gujarat. However, the Gujarat chief secretary has said that they will seek further help if required keeping in view the situation," AP Padhi told media. The Gujarat government is seeking help from Odisha as the east Indian state had successfully handled natural calamities like cyclone 'Fani' earlier this year and cyclone 'Titli' last year. In both the cyclonic storms, Odisha was successful in reducing the casualties and losses due to proper handling of the situation.

Meanwhile, Cyclone Vayu has intensified into a "very severe cyclonic storm". According to IMD, the cyclone would hit Gujarat's Veraval with "wind speed 155-165kmph gusting to 180kmph around the afternoon of 13th June 2019." The Gujarat government has also activated emergency helpline numbers for 10 districts which are likely to be affected by 'Vayu'. All Complaints and grievances can be addressed via these numbers. The educations institution have also been directed to remain closed on June 13 and 14 as a precautionary measure.
