Cyclone Titli to Intensify Into Severe Cyclonic Storm, Red Alert Issued in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh; Centre Says Situation Monitored at Highest Level

New Delhi, October 9: In the wake of the developing cyclonic storm ‘Titli' over the Bay of Bengal and another cyclonic storm ‘Luban’ over the Arabian sea, the Centre on Tuesday issued warnings to various state government an coastal authorities to assess preparedness and meet any cyclone-related contingency. The government also took an urgent review over the looming threat of a cyclonic storm and said the situation is being monitored at the highest level.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert in Odisha and said that a deep depression present for some time over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a cyclonic storm and it is heading towards the Odisha and Andhra Pradesh coast.

Cyclone Titli is expected to intensify further into a Severe Cyclonic Storm and cross east coast of India between Kalingapatnam (north Andhra Pradesh) and Gopalpur (south Odisha) in the morning of October 11. Thereafter, it is very likely to recurve northeastwards, move towards Gangetic West Bengal across coastal Odisha and weaken gradually, the IMD said. Cyclone Titli to Make Landfall in Odisha Soon, Flood Warning Issued in Several Districts.

In the influence of the cyclonic storm, squally wind speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph is very likely to commence along & off along north Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal coast from the night of October 9. It is very likely to increase gradually becoming 100-110 kmph gusting to 125 kmph from 10th October evening onwards along & off south Odisha & adjoining districts of north Andhra Pradesh coasts. Odisha and Andhra Pradesh Weather Forecast: States to Witness Heavy Rainfall for Next Two Days, Cyclonic Storm Alert Issued.

Titli is very likely to intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm during the next 24 hours, the IMD added. Cyclone Titli's eye has been located at 530 km southeast of Gopalpur in Odisha and 480 km east-southeast of Kalingapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, the IMD informed earlier on Tuesday.  In the wake of the cyclonic storm warning, the Odisha government has alerted all district authorities to prepare for emergency relief work.

Union Minister Harsh Vardhan has directed all senior officials to closely monitor the developing situation and all precautions to be taken and necessary communications are done to ensure that the damage is minimal.

Meanwhile, cyclonic storm ‘Luban' is very likely to intensify into a Severe Cyclonic Storm by the night of October 9. It is very likely to move west-north-westwards towards Yemen & South Oman Coasts during the next 5 days. Gale wind speed reaching 85-95 kmph gusting to 105 kmph is prevailing over west central & adjoining southwest the Arabian Sea. It is very likely to increase gradually becoming 110-120 kmph gusting to 135 kmph during October 10 to 12, over west central Arabian Sea around the system centre.
