Cyclone Gaja Wreaks Havoc in Tamil Nadu, Death Toll Jumps to 20
Cyclone Gaja has wreaked havoc in the Tamil Nadu. Around 13 people have lost their lives including 10 men, while many others injured because of heavy rainfall and strong winds caused due to the cyclone which made landfall in the state during the wee hours on Friday.
Chennai, November 13: Cyclone Gaja has wreaked havoc in the Tamil Nadu. Around 20 people have lost their lives, while many others injured because of heavy rainfall and strong winds caused due to the cyclone which made landfall in the state during the wee hours on Friday. The Tamil Nadu government have announced ex-gratia to kin of deceased. Meanwhile, to avoid any major tragedy, the Southern Railway has decided to cancel trains to and fro regions where the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert.
In the wake of the cyclone, schools and colleges are closed in various districts of the state. On Thursday, over 76,000 people were evacuated from low lying areas and housed in 289 relief centres in Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Ramanathapuram, Thanjavur, Pudukottai and Thiruvarur. The power supply was also disrupted in the state due to the cyclone. Fishermen are also asked not to venture into the sea along Tamil Nadu and Puducherry and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts during the next 24 hours.
Meanwhile, DMK president MK Stalin has asked party workers to help people affected in the cyclone. The Indian Coast Guard has pressed eight ships and Dorniers into action to minimise impact from the cyclone since November 9. The Indian Navy is also on alert for conducting rescue and relief operation.
