Cyclone Gaja to Turn Into ‘Severe Cyclonic Storm’ in Next 24 Hours, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh to Witness Heavy Rainfall, Squalls

According to a Director IMD Chennai, cyclonic storm 'Gaja' now lies at about 820 km east-northeast of Nagapattinam. It is expected to cross between Chennai and Nagapattinam during forenoon on November 15.

Chennai, November 12: Cyclone Gaja is expected to intensify into a ‘severe cyclonic storm’ by Monday and is believed to make landfall on midnight of November 14, the India Meteorological Department said. According to a Director IMD Chennai, cyclonic storm 'Gaja' now lies at about 820 km east-northeast of Nagapattinam. It is expected to cross between Chennai and Nagapattinam during forenoon on November 15. Gales reaching 80-90 kms per hour are likely over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Andhra Pradesh.

The officer informed that sea will be very rough and fishermen are advised not to venture in the sea till November 15 as conditions are expected to worsen. Fishermen who are in the deep sea have been advised to return to coast before November 12. Cyclone Gaja to Hit Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh on November 14. 

In the wake of the changing weather conditions, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh will witness heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds and rough sea conditions.  On Sunday, the IMD informed that a deep depression over southeast Bay Bengal has intensified into a cyclonic storm, named ‘Gaja’, and is expected to hit the northern coast of Tamil Nadu between Karaikal and Cuddalore. This would bring heavy rainfall accompanied by wind speeds up to 100 kmph. Cyclonic Storm LUBAN Over Arabian Sea; Heavy Rain Warning in West Bengal, Assam And Other Northeastern States. 

The MeT department said heavy rainfall at isolated places is expected over north coastal Tamil Nadu and adjoining south coastal Andhra Pradesh from the evening of November 14. Also, squally wind speed reaching 45-55 kmph and gusting to 65 kmph off north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coasts would commence from November 14.

Cyclone Gaja will be the second cyclone to hit the coastal area in a month. In October, Cyclone Titli had caused havoc in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh and claimed lives of nearly 70 people.
