Chennai, November 15: Cyclone Gaja is lying 370 km South East of Chennai and 370 km North East of Nagapattinam and likely to make landfall between Pamban and Cuddalore in Tamil Nadu on the evening of 15th November with the wind speed of 80-90 gusting to 100 kmph. In the wake of the cyclone, yesterday, Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy held a review meeting with other officials of various departments at Karaikal district's Thirunallar. In the meeting, CM Narayanasamy directed authorities to keep a stock of relief material and urged people to store drinking water. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) also predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in several coastal areas of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry from the night of November 14. The rainfall intensity is expected to increase today. Isolated places over north Tamil Nadu will receive extremely heavy rainfall above 20 cm. A red alert has been issued in the southern states of India, and precautionary steps are being taken to meet the situation.
Reports inform that two Indian Naval ships Ranvir and Khanjar are on standby to proceed to undertake Humanitarian Aid Distress Relief, evacuation, logistic support and medical aid. Fishermen have been warned to not venture into central parts of south and the central Bay of Bengal as well the southwest and adjoining west central Bay of Bengal. Twenty-two relief shelters have been arranged to accommodate people, also, a 24/7 control room has been placed to help people.
