Puri, May 6: After Cyclone Fani wrecked havoc in Odisha, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday conducted an aerial survey of affected areas of the cyclone-hit state. The Prime Minister was accompanied by Governor Ganeshi Lal, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The extremely severe Cyclone Fani, which hit Odisha coast near Puri on Friday, killed as many as 29 people across the state, the Odisha government said on Sunday. According to sources, the Prime Minister wanted to take a stock of the situation in West Bengal and the Centre, had written to the state about a review meeting of PM with state government officials today. However, the state government of West Bengal has replied that the government officials are busy with election duty and hence the review meeting should not be held.

Fani majorly devastated Puri and parts of Khurdha district. The cyclonic storm triggered heavy rains in parts of Odisha, north coastal Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal since Friday. While thousands of trees were uprooted and several houses destroyed, the cyclone also damaged the electricity and communication facilities in the affected areas. Over a million people were evacuated to safer places as an estimated 10,000 villages and 52 towns in Odisha were predicted to be hit by the 'extremely severe' cyclonic storm 'Fani'. On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said over Rs 1,000 crore had been released in advance for the states affected by Cyclone Fani. While addressing an election rally in Rajasthan, the Prime Minister said the government was with the people in times of crises.
Meanwhile, several states including Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh also stepped forward to help rebuild Odisha by donating funds to help the cyclone-ravaged state. While, Andhra Pradesh donated Rs 15 crore financial assistance for Odisha, Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu donated Rs 10 crore each on Sunday.
