Cyclone Fani Live News Updates: Restoration Worked at Bhubaneswar Airport Underway, Aircraft Movements Expected by 1 PM Tomorrow

DG of PIB informed that after the damage at Bhubaneswar airport, restoration work is underway. He also informed that Teams from the Airport Authority of India are working and Aircraft movements expected by by 1 PM tomorrow.

No confirmed report of deaths, but 160 reportedly injured, says DG PIB. He wrote, "As per telephonic information, in Puri, extensive damage to kuchha houses, old buildings and temporary shops. Union Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu directs Civil Aviation Secretary to continuously monitor the situation of Cyclone Fani. He said, "Directed Civil Aviation Secy to continuously monitor the situation. DGCA will be issuing revised advisories to Airlines and when necessary. Taking all possible steps for passenger safety and to minimize their inconvenience."

Cyclone Fani is nearing towards West Bengal with a speed of 90-100 km/hr. The wind speed is less than half at which it struck the Odisha coast earlier today. 

AIIMS PG Exam scheduled on May 5 has been cancelled in view of the cyclone which has struck Odisha and other eastern states.

Even as reports claim the death of 6 people in cyclone Fani so far, an Indian Coast Guard official has claimed that no casualty has been incurred so far.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that he has announced a total of Rs 1,000 crore relief package for Cyclone Fani in different states. "I took latest update from officers. I held a review meeting on Thursday. More than Rs 1000 cr was release to concerned govts y'day in advance. NDRF, Indian Coast Guard, Army, Navy, Air Force are working with admn. I assure the affected people that nation & centre are with them", PM Modi said. 

Sanjeev Bandhopadhyay, Deputy DGM Meteorological Department was quoted by reports saying that the "extremely severe cyclonic storm" had crossed Puri from 8 am to 10 am, the eye of the storm is now on land and that it has weakened to a "severe cyclonic storm."

In the wake of the extremely severe cyclonic storm- Cyclone Fani, parts of Uttar Pradesh including Barsana, Bharatpur, Mathura will receive rainfall during the next 2 hours.

At least six people have been killed in Odisha's Puri, where Cyclone Fani made landfall. The storm is now headed towards West Bengal.

Indian Navy's P-8I and Dornier are being scheduled to be launched in the afternoon for undertaking aerial survey to assess the extent of impact and devastation post FANI crossing the coast.

"In the next 3 hours, Cyclone Fani is expected to weaken with a wind speed of 150-160 km per hour, subsequently it will weaken and move north-north eastwards. By evening, it may weaken into severe cyclonic storm over extreme northern part of Odisha," said IMD official Mrityunjay Mohapatra.

Odisha has been hit in a worse manner by Cyclone Fani, with several villages submerged under water, hundreds of trees and huts have been uprooted. The wind has been surging at a speed of 180 km/hr.

Winds are blowing at a speed of 175 km/hr in Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha, as cyclone Fani makes landfall in Puri. Here are the visuals:

"Winds in Puri, Odisha are blowing at a maximum speed of 240-245 km per hour and heavy to very heavy rains are continuing over the Odisha coast. After landfall, the impact is likely to reduce and it is likely to move towards West Bengal coast," said a senior IMD official stationed in Hyderabad.

"Extremely severe cyclone Fani landfall started at 8 AM. Some of the portion of the eye has already entered land area. It'll take 2 more hours to complete landfall process. Landfall position is close to Puri. It'll continue upto 10:30 AM," said HR Biswas, Director, Met Dept, Bhubaneswar.
