Cyclone Fani Forecast: Cyclonic Storm to Turn Severe in Next 24 Hours; Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha to Receive Heavy Rainfall

The cyclone warning division of the MeT department informed that these states will brace for very strong winds, heavy rainfall and rough sea conditions for the next 24 hours.

New Delhi, April 29: Several parts of Kerala and coastal areas of North Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha will witness heavy rainfall on April 30 and May 1 as Cyclone 'Fani' is very likely to intensify into a 'severe cyclonic storm'. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday issued a weather warning stating that the cyclonic storm will intensify in the next 12 hours and further soar into a "very severe cyclonic storm" in the next 24 hours. According to reports, Cyclone Fani will not make landfall in Tamil Nadu, but may bring light rain in some northern parts of the state. The IMD has predicted light to moderate rainfall at many places and heavy rainfall at isolated places in Kerala on April 29 and April 30. The IMD on Saturday had warned that a depression over the Indian Ocean and southeast Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm over the next 12 hours and further into a severe cyclonic storm. Cyclone Fani Likely to Intensify by Afternoon, IMD Issues Alert in Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

At present, the cyclonic storm is currently centred over the southeast Bay of Bengal its and adjoining areas, less than 1,000 km southeast of Chennai. The IMD said  the storm could generate gusts of winds with speeds of up to 50-60 km per hour in the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.

The sea conditions very likely to be rough to very rough along and off Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh Coasts from April 29 to May 1, along & off north Andhra Pradesh Coasts on 1-3 May and along & off Odisha Coast from May 2 onwards.
