Cyclone Fani: E Palaniswami, Yogi Adityanath Announce Rs 10 Crore Relief Each For Odisha

A total of 16 deaths were reported from Odisha due to the cyclonic storm. Nearly 10,000 villages and 52 towns in Odisha will be affected by the cyclone. Over a million people were evacuated to safer places.

New Delhi, May 5: Cyclone Fani wreaked havoc in coastal villages and towns of Odisha after it made a landfall in Puri on Friday. The cyclonic storm was so severe that it uprooted trees, damaged houses, crops and property in several parts of the state. In the wake of the massive destruction caused by the cyclonic storm, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Sunday ordered an immediate contribution of Rs 10 crore from the Chief Minister’s Public Relief Fund to the Government of Odisha. In a bid to help the cyclone-hit state, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also extended help and announced Rs 10 crore from CM Relief Fund for emergency relief for Odisha. The funds will help the victims of the cyclone-ravaged state.

Over a million people were evacuated to safer places as the country’s worst cyclone in more than five years is set to make landfall in Odisha, raising fears of widespread devastation. A total of 16 deaths were reported from Odisha due to the cyclonic storm. The tropical cyclone had maximum impact in districts including Ganjam, Gajapati, Khurda, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, Bhadrak, Jajpur and Balasore in Odisha. After causing havoc in Odisha, Fani entered West Bengal on Saturday night. The severe cyclone, one of the strongest to batter the Indian subcontinent in decades, weakened before entering Bangladesh on Saturday morning from West Bengal.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Saturday said "a record 1.2 million people were evacuated in 24 hours" claiming to have carried out the "biggest human evacuation in history". The Chief Minister took to Twitter and urged people of the nation to help restore Odisha by donating online in the Chief Minister Relief Fund at cmrfodisha.gov.in.

Meanwhile, the UN agency for disaster praised India for minimising loss of life due to the cyclonic storm and said it helped authorities conduct a well-targeted evacuation plan and minimise the loss of life.
