Speaking to media in Guwahati, state finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that situation is returning to normalcy in the state. Sarma said that a high-level inquiry will be set up to probe the violence in the state. The minister confirmed that 136 cases have been registered and 190 people have been arrested for their involvement during the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests.
Assam had been on the boil for the past few days as thousands of people came out on the streets to protest against the amended Citizenship Act. Agitators engaged in pitched conflicts with the police across various cities, forcing the government to impose a curfew. At least five people have died in alleged police firing.
The new Citizenship Act grants Indian citizenship to six religious minorities- Sikhs, Hindus, Jains, Parsis, Buddhists and Christians- from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan who have entered India on or before 31 December 2014 and facing religious persecution in their countries of origin.
