Mumbai, May 13: Alleging adverse effects caused their children's deaths, a group of parents from across the country intends to sue officials of government organisations involved in the Covishield vaccine's roll-out during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as Serum Institute of India (SII), a Pune-based manufacturer of the vaccine. This comes after AstraZeneca's admission in a UK court that the Covid vaccination may cause thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS), a dangerous blood clotting condition, in rare cases.

Hyderabad-based Rachana Gangu and Coimbatore native Venugopalan Govindan are spearheading the group. Covishield Side Effects: Parents To Sue Serum Institute India Over Daughter's Alleged Vaccine Death After AstraZeneca's Court Admission.

Here's How This Parents' Group Came Together Against SII

According to a report by TOI, eight families whose loved ones are believed to have died as a result of the vaccine's side effects came together, while more such families are anticipated to join them in future. The eight families reportedly belong to Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kerala, Mumbai, Coimbatore, and Kapurthala. Instead of coming from taxpayers, the parents are seeking compensation and exemplary disciplinary action against SII and the government agencies in charge of the implementation of the vaccination, Venugopalan, the father of 20-year-old Karunya who passed away in July 2021, told TOI. He claimed that he had received four additional cases of fatalities and two cases of major injuries brought on by Covishield recently.

Rachana stated that nothing had changed about the joint writ suit she and Karunya's parents filed in the Supreme Court in October 2021. Rachana lost her 18-year-old daughter, Rithaika, in June 2021. Since the local authorities were not providing her access to Rithaika’s autopsy report, we were left without any documentation when she passed away. To obtain the data, we had to file a few RTIS. The postmortem report unequivocally stated that the clotting in her brain caused her death from Covishield, she asserted. Covishield-Vaxzevria Withdrawn: AstraZeneca Announces to Recall Its COVID-19 Vaccine Globally After Admitting That It Can Cause Rare Side Effect TTS.

As per Venugopalan, a website is being developed to facilitate the recording of vaccine-related adverse effects, as the Cowin app's AEFI (adverse event following immunisation) button is malfunctioning. Covishield was created by Oxford University and UK-based pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca, while SII manufactured the vaccine in India.
