New Delhi, November 8: With a fresh spike of 45,674 coronavirus infections and 559 deaths in the past 24 hours, the number of COVID-19 cases in India topped 85 lakh on Sunday. Out of the total COVID-19 cases in the country, 5,12,665 are currently active. On a positive note, as many as 49,082 people recovered from the coronavirus over the past 24 hours. With this, the total number of recoveries in India reached 78,68,968. One patient had migrated to another country. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) conducted 11,84,487 sample tests in a single day on Saturday, taking the total number of samples tested so far to 11,77,36,791. Maharashtra continues to be the worst-hit with a total of 17,14,273 cases, including 45,115 deaths; followed by Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. The national capital on Saturday witnessed a slight drop in new coronavirus cases as it logged 6,953 infections, taking the overall tally to 4,30,784. On Friday, the city had recorded 7,178 new cases, the highest ever single-day tally since the pandemic struck the city.
The overall number of global coronavirus cases has topped 49.7 million, while the deaths have surged to more than 1,249,010. As of Sunday morning, the total caseload and death toll stood at 49,750,431 and 1,249,018, according to the Johns Hopkins University.
The US is the worst-hit country with the world's highest number of cases and deaths at 9,849,696 and 237,017. India has the second-highest number of COVID-19 cases in the world, while Brazil accounts for the second-highest number of fatalities.
