New Delhi, November 26: Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi, speaking on the occasion of Constitution Day on November 26, Monday, said that the Indian Constitution was criticised when it was brought into force. The CJI added that Sir Ivor Jennings (prominent British Lawyer and former Vice Chancellor of University of Cambridge), had termed it "as far too large and rigid." However, the CJI added that time has weakened criticism and it's a matter of pride that the Constitution of India has lived with great vigour in last seven decades. CJI Gogoi added that, "Our constitution is voice of marginalised and prudence of majority. Its wisdom continues to guide us in moments of crisis. It's in our best interest to heed advice under constitution. If we don't,our hubris will result in sharp descent into chaos."
Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, on Constitution Day said that "Ordinary Indian's sixth sense & DNA of his inherent trust in Indian democratic process, regardless of his religion, caste, community, economic status or literacy is the most defining moment of India's constitutional governance."
The Constitution of India, which made India a sovereign, democratic republic, was adopted on November 26, 1949, and it came into effect on January 26, 1950. While January 26 is celebrated as Republic Day, November 26 is remembered as the day when the Constitution of India was adopted and hence celebrated as Constitution Day in India.
