New Delhi, December 15: Union Minister of State for Development of North Eastern Region Jitendra Singh on Sunday, December 15, said that the situation in Assam and the northeast is improving. Singling out the Congress, he said the party has a big hand in the violence. The northeast has been witnessing widespread protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019. There are some unscrupulous elements who are trying to take advantage of the situation to further their politics, Congress has a big hand in it," Singh was quoted as saying by ANI. Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Ripun Bora said he will challenge the new Citizenship law in Supreme court. "We will file a writ petition in Supreme Court challenging Citizenship Amendment Act, on Monday," he said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi ina electoral rally Jharkhand's Dumka congratulated the people of Assam for keeping away violence and presenting their points peacefully against new citizenship law. Targeting the opposition Congress, he said, "Congress and its allies have raised a storm over citizenship law; they are behind unrest and arson."
Assam has been witnessing protests over the Citizenship Act, which was cleared by the Parliament last week. As per CAA, migrants from six non-Muslim communities who entered India from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan till December 31, 2014, will be granted Indian citizenship.
