Mumbai, July 1: Congress spokesperson Priyanka Chaturvedi came under sharp attack of right-wing trolls on social media who attributed a fake quote to her on the Mandsaur rape case, and later threatened to rape her daughter as a mark of revenge.

Priyanka reached out to the Mumbai Police via Twitter, which has initiated action in the case. The Twitter user identified himself as 'Jay Shri Ram' and using Twitter handle - @GirishK1605. The account has now been deleted. Below is the screenshot of his heinous rape threat.

The fake quote attributed to Priyanka says it is the "right of Muslims to commit rape". The message has been going viral on social media in a bid to tarnish the image of Congress, while boosting communal enmity against the Muslims.

The targeting of Priyanka is reminiscent to the attack unleashed by right-wing trolls on NDTV anchor Ravish Kumar. Anti-Hindu quotes were attributed to him and spread across social media in May. In the past month, the veteran journalist had also received threat call. The callers said they wanted to "murder Ravish for his statements against India and against Hindus".

While those who are opposed to the 'political right' are considered vulnerable to the troll attack, the most recent among their victims is a BJP veteran and incumbent Union Minister Sushma Swaraj.

After the External Affairs Ministry transferred passport officer Vikas Mishra for allegedly harassing an interfaith couple in Lucknow, Swaraj came under the attack of right-wing micro-commentators, who accused her of "Muslim appeasement".

The trolls addressed her as "Sushma begum" and asked her to "convert to Islam" at the earliest. They also asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to expel her from the Cabinet for her "pro-Muslim" and "pro-Pakistan views".

Swaraj had put up a poll on Sunday asking users whether they approved the vicious trolling against her. Interestingly, 43 per cent said "yes" by the time this report was published.

Her husband Swaraj Kaushal was also targeted by the trolls. In one of the messages sent to him, a troll identified as Mukesh Gupta (@MG_IITDelhi) said he should "beat up his wife for Muslim appeasement". "Your words have given us unbearable pain," Kaushal said as he posted the screenshot of the offensive tweet.
