Guwahati, May 10: The Bharatiya Janata Party-led State government on Friday imposed Section-144 in Hailakandi town until further orders, hours after clashes between two groups occurred in the vicinity. In the incident, one person sustained bullet injuries, while several cars and bikes were set on fire and shops were vandalised.
According to the initial information, the district administration had issued the restriction of assembly of four people in the area and are keeping a strict vigil to maintain law and order. Reports state that a group of youngsters allegedly began throwing stones at devotees who had assembled outside the mosque in Marwari Patty area to offer prayers this afternoon. Following this, violence erupted and 15 people, including three constables, were injured. Even additional security forces have been rushed to Hailakandi from Silchar and Karimganj.
The statement signed by District Magistrate Keerthi Jalli read, as reported by NDTV, "An emergency has arisen, necessitating immediate action to ensure the speedy resumption of public order and tranquillity. Therefore, considering the above facts and circumstances, section 144 of the CrPC (has been imposed) along with orders that nobody without a special permit can go about in public or leave their house within the limits of Hailakandi town with effect from 1:00 pm of 10th May, 2019."
