A 30-year-old woman suffered a breakdown in a court, while her lawyer husband paid her the pending alimony, all in coins. Imagine the plight of a divorced woman who is seeking the maintenance of Rs. 25,000 and that too in coins! That is what transpired in a recent court-room drama that took place in Chandigarh.
The woman alleged her husband of sheer harassment and complained to the court that she would receive her monthly maintenance amount of Rs 25,000 in the denominations of Rs. 1 and Rs 2 coins. She said that only four notes of Rs 100 she received, the rest of the amount was in coins.
The dramatic proceedings made the court adjourn the hearing to the next date, i.e. July 27, so that the alimony money can be counted.
Talking about the case, the husband is himself an advocate in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. In his defence on the way of payment of the alimony, he said that he had no money to pay.
The wife refused to buy his argument and said that this was another way to harass her. She said that her husband had high-profile clients and also has some properties in his name.
The husband had filed for separation in the year 2014 and eventually for divorce. Justifying his mover, he said that nowhere it had been mentioned that the money has to be paid in specific denominations.
