Coimbatore, October 16: In a tragic incident, S Karthik, a 37-year-old man from Poochiyur near Narasimhanaickenpalayam, drowned after falling into an abandoned well while attempting to rescue his daughter’s kitten. The well, over 100 feet deep, contained approximately 20 feet of water, and Karthik drowned after the rope he used to descend broke. The incident came to light on October 12 when Karthik's four-year-old daughter reported that her kitten had fallen into the abandoned well near their home. In a desperate attempt to save the pet, Karthik ventured into the well early on October 14, using a rope to lower himself down. Local residents quickly alerted the Periyanaickenpalayam fire brigade, who launched a search operation to locate Karthik. While the rescue team successfully retrieved the kitten and even a cobra from the well, Karthik's whereabouts remained unknown. The search continued for nearly two days, with firefighters working tirelessly to recover him. The Hindu reported that Karthik's body was ultimately retrieved on Monday, October 14, after the water in the well was pumped out.
