Mumbai, September 6: In anticipation of the Ganeshostav 2024, the Mumbai Traffic Police has announced that the Coastal Road will remain open 24 hours a day from September 7 to 17. Currently, the Coastal Road’s southern arm operates from 7 am to 11 pm, while the northern arm follows the same schedule and is closed on weekends. To manage the expected increase in traffic during the festival, civic officials have agreed to keep the road open around the clock.

The Coastal Road in Mumbai is currently undergoing significant construction work, leading to night closures for the Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL) connector and weekend closures of the northbound carriageway. Despite these disruptions, officials are optimistic that opening the road 24/7 during the upcoming festival will help ease traffic congestion on internal roads, particularly on immersion days, which typically experience heavy traffic diversions and restrictions. Ganeshotsav 2024: Mumbai Metro Announces Extension of Metro Train Services During Ganpati Festival, Andheri West and Gundavali Terminals Train Timings Extended to 11:30 PM.

24-Hour Availability, Traffic Diversions During Ganeshotsav 2024

In addition to keeping the Coastal Road open 24 hours a day during the Ganesh festival, the Mumbai Traffic Police has announced multiple traffic diversions across the city. These measures are based on historical data of crowding at various locations. An advisory has been issued for idol immersion processions, which will traverse various Road Over Bridges (ROBs). To further manage traffic, the movement of heavy vehicles, except for emergency service vehicles, has been banned in Mumbai during the festival period. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced plans to open the southbound carriageway of the Coastal Road and BWSL by next week. The Coastal Road, spanning 10.58 km, extends from the Princess Street Flyover at Marine Drive to the Worli end of the BWSL. The southern section, from Worli to Marine Drive, was inaugurated on March 12, followed by the northern section, from Marine Drive to Haji Ali, on June 10. The final 3.5-km stretch from Haji Ali to Abdul Gaffer Khan opened on July 11. In May, the BMC successfully launched two long ‘Bowarch String’ girders to connect the Coastal Road and BWSL, although progress was slowed by heavy rains.
