New Delhi, May 7: The Delhi police on Tuesday detained women lawyers and activists protesting against giving the clean chit to Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi in a sexual harassment case a day ago. Section 144 has also been imposed as it is not allowed to gather outside the apex court for any kind of demonstration.

Yesterday, the in-house committee led by Justice S A Bobde gave the clean chit to CJI Gogoi. The committee, also comprises Justices Indu Malhotra and Indira Banerjee, said it found no substance in the sexual harassment allegations against CJI Ranjan Gogoi. The Chief Justice appeared before the panel on May 1.

Protesters outside the Supreme Court:

A woman, who is a former employee of the Supreme Court, levelled allegations against CJI Ranjan Gogoi reportedly in a letter to 22 judges of the apex court, after which an in-house committee was formed to probe the charges. The woman withdrew from the proceedings of the committee on April 30. In a statement to the media, she expressed serious reservations over the panel, saying it was "an in-house committee of sitting judges junior to the CJI and not an external committee as I had requested."

After the clean chit was given to the CJI, the complainant said she was "disappointed" and "dejected". She added, "I am now extremely scared and terrified because the in-house committee, despite having all material placed before them, has given me no justice or protection and said nothing about the absolutely malafide dismissals and suspensions, indignities, and humiliations suffered by me and my family." She said she was not even given the opportunity to go through her recorded statement.
