CJI Ranjan Gogoi Says No Urgent Hearing Unless Someone is to be Hanged or Evicted
The CJI made it clear that no urgent hearing will take place in the Supreme Court until some criteria are fixed.
New Delhi, October 3: Newly sworn-in Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi pitched for strict parameters for urgent mentioning and hearing of cases. Speaking after taking oath as 46th Chief Justice of India, Ranjan Gogoi said, "Unless someone is going to be hanged today or evicted out of his house, no other matter can be mentioned for urgent hearing."
The CJI made it clear that no urgent hearing will take place in the Supreme Court until some criteria are fixed to decide what case needs to be heard urgently. At present, the apex court has 20 minutes reserved for the urgent hearing in any case. "We will work out the parameters then we will see as to how mentioning will be done," Justice Gogoi said. The first casualty of the Chief Justice's call for parameters for urgent hearing was advocate Prashant Bhushan, who wanted to mention about the deportation of some Rohingya Muslims illegal immigrants. Responding to Bhushan, Justice Gogoi said file it, and it will be listed, reported TOI. He added that Public Interest Litigation (PIL) "on every ill is not maintainable in the SC". Soon after assuming office on Wednesday, the Chief Justice snubbed advocate Mathews Nedumpara who wanted to congratulate him. The CJI brushed him aside saying let's get on with work and that these congratulatory messages inside court are not done. Justice Gogoi is the first person from the Northeast to reach the top position of the judiciary.
