Gurugram, May 6: In a bizarre incident, a man in Gurugram was burnt almost 80% after a drunken man allegedly set his cigarette kiosk on fire while he was sitting inside it. Reports inform that the incident took place on Saturday in IMT Manesar after a fight over outstanding payment for cigarettes. According to a report by Hindustan Times, the injured man has been identified as Abdul and is reported to be in critical condition. Giving details about the incident, Police informed that the suspect, a tempo driver, who is yet to be identified, went to the kiosk on Friday night at Baskushla Chowk in Sector 7 and asked for a ‘beedi’. The suspect later asked for two more cigarettes but refused to pay for it. This led to a heated argument between the two men. A day later, the tempo driver returned to the kiosk on Saturday at 5.30pm and again asked for a cigarette. Sub-inspector Tejpal, IMT-Manesar police station was quoted in the HT report saying that when Abdul asked the suspect to clear his pending amount for two cigarettes and a beedi, he started arguing. The suspect also tried to steal money from the cash box. In a fit of rage, the suspect started throwing petrol from a bottle that he was carrying and set Abdul’s kiosk on fire. According to a report by HT, the victim sustained burn injuries to his face, arms and legs and was rushed to Rockland Hospital. He was later referred to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi.
The report quotes the victim’s son, Mohammad Imtiaz, saying that the suspected tempo driver was in an inebriated condition and had planned the attack. He was also carrying a petrol bottle with him. On Saturday, Imtiaz informed that an hour after his father opened his shop, the accused man created a commotion and after trying to steal from the cash box, threw petrol on the kiosk and set it on fire.
The victim’s son said his father was engulfed in flames due to the combustible items in the kiosk. He said they put out the fire with help from neighbours and rushed him to a private hospital in Manesar. A case was registered against unidentified accused under sections 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 336 (act endangering life) and 427 (mischief causing damage) of the IPC on Saturday at IMT Manesar police station.
