New Delhi, December 25: The year-end usually sees a spike in business owing to the festive time with people celebrating Christmas and New Year. However, the situation is different this time due to the ongoing protests against CAA and NRC that has been taking place across the nation. Eating out business in places like Delhi, Lucknow and Kolkata has witnessed a sharp dip after violence erupted on the streets.
A lot of the major hotel chains have seen the cancellation of their New Year parties. Restaurants and other businesses have seen a muted Christmas, but they are hopeful that the sentiment would pick up as New Year approaches. However, people travelling from abroad to the country are also sceptical of coming due to the unrest taking place and the coverage of the incident also by the international media. According to an Economic Times report, this comes at a time when the dine out industry was already struggling to meet their ends meet due to the steep rise in taxes and reduced consumer sentiment.
In several areas, the internet was also shut down to avoid the escalation of tension further. According to a previous report, the online food delivery business suffered a blow of 25-30 percent decline, while the other online categories also witnessed a drop of 3-5 percent. There was also a delay in the delivery as vehicles were stuck in the middle of traffic snarls.
