New Delhi, July 25: The People's Liberation Army (PLA) of China transgressed into Indian territory 30 times in May this year. Notably, the border violations were reported between the Wuhan and Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summits. Both the events featured bilateral talks between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Out of the 30 recorded transgressions in May, 22 were carried out by PLA soldiers who camped inside the Indian territory, whereas, 8 incidents of transgressions were carried out through unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), used by the Chinese military for reconnaissance missions.
Most of the border violations were reported in North Ladakh region. Depsang, Pangang Tso (lake), Demchok and Trig Heights were areas where the PLA cadres, along with UAVs were found in the early hours of the day through May. The Indian side had registered a complaint with their counterparts on the recorded transgressions.
Apart from Ladakh, cross-border violations were also reported in the disputed portion of Arunachal Pradesh, including Dichu, Shiyung La and Asaphila, which China considers as its own.
According to the News18 report, the number of transgressions recorded in 2017 are way more than the preceding year. While 426 incidents of Sino-Indian border violations were recorded by India last year, the number was 273 in the preceding year.
Following the 73-day standoff in Doklam last year, when the two armies were locked face to face at the trijunction region near Bhutan, the number of transgressions by the PLA went up, indicating an aggressive approach.
In the southern autonomous region of Tibet, a military drill was conducted last year. According to Chinese military expert Song Zhongping, who is also a commentator in the state-run Global Times, the "imaginary target" of the drill was India.
