Sukma, November 12: In a major breakthrough for security forces, two Naxalites were killed in an encounter with security in Sukma district of Chhattisgarh. Two rifles were also recovered from the slain Naxalites. In another encounter in Bijapur today, five Naxals were killed, and five jawans sustained injuries in a gun battle that took place at around 12.30pm. An improvised explosive device (IED) was also detonated in Dantewada district by Naxals earlier today. Another explosive was recovered in the Sukma district. Meanwhile, on Sunday, hours before the polling of the first phase of assembly elections in the state, Naxalites ambushed security forces in Koyali Beda and triggered six Improvised Explosive Device (IED) explosions. Security forces have also recovered a huge amount of Arms and ammunition.
The first phase of the assembly elections in the state for 18 seats in eight Naxal-affected districts ended today. Umesh Sinha, state Election Commission chief informed that the voter turnout was 70 percent. The voting was conducted amid massive security arrangement due to a threat from Naxals. As many as 190 candidates, including state Chief Minister Raman Singh, were in the fray for 18 of the 90 Assembly seats. The second phase of elections in the state will take place on November 20. The results will be declared on December 11.
