Balrampur, August 1: In a tragic incident, a three-year-old girl died after consuming liquor, mistaking it for water, in the Balrampur district of Chhattisgarh on Tuesday. The toddler, identified as Sarita from the Trikunda region, was playing at home when the accident occurred.

TOI reported that while Sarita's mother was busy with household chores, the child entered her grandmother’s room, where a bottle of mahua drink was kept on the table. Unattended for a while, the thirsty girl assumed the bottle contained water and drank directly from it. Shortly afterward, she began to feel dizzy and expressed a desire to take a bath. Her mother detected the smell of mahua from Sarita’s mouth and rushed into the grandmother’s room, where she found mahua spits on the floor. Realizing what had happened, she informed her husband, and the couple hurriedly took Sarita to the hospital. Despite receiving treatment, Sarita's condition deteriorated, and she succumbed on Tuesday. Authorities conducted an autopsy before handing over the girl’s body to her grieving family.

The police have taken over the case and are investigating the circumstances leading to the incident.
