Chennai, May 24: In a case of suspected suicide pact in Tamil Nadu’s Chennai, a teenage couple, both of whom had recently appeared for their class 10 examinations, walked into the sea off Thiruvottiyur coast on Friday with their hands tied together with a shawl and ended their lives after parents objected to their relationship. Their lifeless bodies were discovered by fishermen on Friday after their parents had noticed them missing since Thursday night, according to police reports.

When their relationship came to light, their parents objected to it because of their age and also because they belonged to different communities. Despite the opposition, the two continued to see each other. On Thursday afternoon, they rode on a two-wheeler to Thiruvottiyur, where their fate took a tragic turn. When the girl’s parents realised she was missing, they initiated a frantic search. Eventually, they reached out to the boy’s parents, who confirmed that both teenagers were nowhere to be found. The families scoured the homes of friends, as well as railway stations and bus stops, but their efforts yielded no results.
Desperate and fearing the worst, the families sought assistance from the police. Fishermen near Thangal in Thiruvottiyur had already recovered two bodies from the sea. The lifeless bodies were transported to the government hospital for post-mortem examination.
