Chennai, January 3: The Chennai police recently arrested a gym trainer for allegedly killing a man to claim Rs 1 crore insurance money. The accused, who is a trainer at a gym was arrested on suspicion of faking his death by killing a man who matched his description. Police officials said that the accused murdered the man to claim an insurance payout.
The police also arrested two of his friends for their alleged involvement in the murder plot, reports the Times of India. The accused has been identified as Suresh (38). An officer said that in September 2023, the Ayanavaram-based gym trainer hatched a plan to fake his death and claim Rs 1 crore life insurance. The incident came to light when the deceased's mother filed a habeas corpus petition for her missing son. Cops learned about the missing person identified as Dillibabu being last spotted with Suresh. However, Suresh's plan failed miserably when the police registered the incident as suicide and the insurance company rejected the claim.
Revealing his murder conspiracy, the officer said that the accused and his two friends started looking for a person who had a physical resemblance to Suresh. The trio identified Suresh's former tenant, Dillibabu, as a potential body double. To execute their plan, the trip took Dillibabu to Puducherry for an alleged drinking session. Over there, they took him to a farm hut and set it ablaze with Dillibabu in it. Suresh's family assumed he died in the blaze and even conducted his last rites. But in reality, Suresh was absconding. The incident took a twist when police registered a case of suicide after receiving information from the accused's sister Jayashree.
Following this, the insurance company denied insurance payout to the family citing FIR, and said that rules did not allow payment in case of death by suicide.
