Chennai, August 22: A heated argument between an autorickshaw driver and a passenger in Thiruvanmiyur took a shocking turn when the driver bit off a portion of the passenger's finger and spat it out. The incident occurred on Monday morning and resulted in the arrest of the autorickshaw driver, K Santhanam, on charges of assault. The victim, S Ramu, 50, managed to recover the severed part of his finger but could not have it reattached despite medical efforts.
According to multiple reports, Ramu, who had just completed his night shift at a private firm, boarded Santhanam's share autorickshaw to reach his residence in Thoraipakkam. A disagreement arose when Ramu's leg accidentally touched the driver's back. Despite Santhanam's request, Ramu refused to move his leg due to pain, due to which the argument escalated. The situation took a violent turn when Santhanam allegedly deviated from the route, leading Ramu to object. The ensuing argument led to a physical confrontation, during which Santhanam attacked Ramu with an iron rod. In a shocking display of aggression, Santhanam bit off a portion of Ramu's finger and spat it out. Passersby who witnessed the altercation intervened and rescued Ramu from the driver's clutches. Ramu sought medical attention immediately, but doctors at Government Royapettah Hospital determined that his severed finger part was too damaged for reattachment. Ramu lodged a complaint with the Thiruvanmiyur police, who tracked down Santhanam using the autorickshaw's registration number. The 53-year-old driver was arrested at his residence in Vettuvankeni.
