Chennai, September 30: In order to boost ridership, Chennai Metro is considering special discounts on holidays. The ridership of Chennai metro hovers around 1.2 lakh on weekdays, however, the digits fall sharply to round 70,000 on Sundays and public holidays. To woo commuters, the administration is considering a 50 percent discount on Sundays or on Sundays and other public holidays, The Hindu reported. According to The Hindu, discounts can be for a few months or up to one year. The proposal is yet to finalised and sent to the board of Chennai Metro Rail board. The feeder services are already being operated from many metro stations to the prominent spots in the city which are also likely to increase patronage to the service.
Earlier this year, Chennai Metro Rail had launched a monthly pass that allowed commuters unlimited rides. To avail the services, the passenger had to pay Rs 2,500 with an additional refundable fee of Rs 50 to purchase a tourist card.
In 2017, the metro administration offered a 40 percent discount for a week which reported an increase of 67 percent in the ridership. During the Diwali 2017, the Chennai Metro offered a discount of 20 percent on tickets to boost its numbers.
