Chennai: Man Brainwashes and Recruits Youth for Hizb-Ut-Tahrir in Tamil Nadu, Arrested

Police arrested a man from Tondiarpet late Thursday night on charges of brainwashing and recruiting youth for Hizb-Ut-Tahrir, a fundamentalist organisation.

Chennai, October 7: Police arrested a man from Tondiarpet late Thursday night on charges of brainwashing and recruiting youth for Hizb-Ut-Tahrir, a fundamentalist organisation. The 32-year-old accused allegedly frequented mosques and Islamic religious places to recruit youngsters and had made several social media posts promoting the outfit.

According to a report published by The New Indian Express, the accused was identified as Abdul Rahim, also known as Sait. Rahim, who served as an Imam at a local mosque, was recently dismissed following disputes with other mosque members. During a search of Rahim's residence, police discovered pamphlets and books related to the caliphate and the Islamic ruling system, along with a machete. Authorities seized 17 books and are considering handing the case over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

In August, Chennai Police arrested six individuals under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) for allegedly recruiting members for the banned organization Hizb ut-Tahrir in Royapettah. According to sources from the Cyber Crime Police, the arrests followed an investigation that revealed the group had been using YouTube campaigns to recruit members for Hizb ut-Tahrir, an organization banned in multiple countries. The Chennai Police have submitted all case-related documents to the Tamil Nadu Government, which has prompted the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to register a case and undertake further investigations.
