Chennai, August 30: Heavy rains lashed parts of Tamil Nadu including the state capital of Chennai on Friday evening. Social media users of the city took to Twitter to share images and videos of the incessent downpour which left people returning from work drenched. The local weather department had already issued a forecast, predicting moderate showers in the city today. The rains were triggered by the formation of low pressure over Bay of Bengal, with "perfect convergence happening right at Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Chennai belt", a Meteorological Department official said. The maximum and minimum temperatures across the coastal belt is expected to hover around 36 degree celsius and 27 degree celsius, respectively.

Notably, the Southwest Monsoon is entering into its final phase, with approximately a month of rainfall remaining in most parts of the nation. The intensity of downpour is predicted to weaken with each passing day. The IMD has predicted 100 per cent of the long-time average rainfall recorded during the month of September.
