Salem, September 20: In a shocking incident, Chennai police on Monday arrested a man for allegedly killing his wife. The accused, Johnson (27) surrendered himself before Avadi police after failing to dump the body. According to the police, the accused committed the crime after finding out that his wife had hidden the fact that she was previously married.  Johnson is a contract worker for the local corporation in Avadi, and his wife, Sarammal, works as a daily wage labourer.

As per the New Indian Express report, Sarammal had previously been married to Amos, a resident of Ambattur, with whom she had two sons. Following a heated dispute, Amos left his family and relocated to Andhra Pradesh. According to the police, Sarammal, who entrusted the care of her two children to her parents, entered into a romantic relationship with Johnson, who happened to be working near her residence. Inspector Krishnamoorthy of the Avadi police station explained that Sarammal and Johnson eventually started cohabitating in Ambattur and formalized their relationship by getting married at a temple on May 7. He further noted that Sarammal's children were residing with their grandparents in another part of the city.

The police said that upon learning about Sarammal's previous marriage, Johnson had a quarrel with her and left their residence. A few days prior to her murder, Sarammal visited Johnson's home to confront him. An argument ensued, intensifying to a point where Johnson grabbed a kitchen knife and fatally cut her throat. As a result of her injuries, Sarammal bled to death, according to the police. Upon receiving his surrender, a police team promptly went to his residence, recovered the body, and sent it to the Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital for a postmortem examination. Subsequently, Johnson was presented in court and was placed in judicial custody. An ongoing investigation into the matter is currently underway.
