Chandrapur Reeling Under 47.8 Degree Celsius, Nagpur Sizzles at 47.5 as Intense Heatwave Hits Maharashtra's Vidarbha
The 47-degree mark, considered to be the benchmark of 'extreme heat wave conditions', has been breached by Nagpur six times since 2003.
Nagpur, May 29: The Vidarbha belt of Maharashtra is reeling under intense heatwave, with the cities of Nagpur and Chandrapur witnessing record-high temperature. In Nagpur, the mercury sizzled at 47.5 degrees -- the second highest in the last 10 years. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that the heat wave may further rise in days to come.
The highest temperature in Nagpur was recorded as 47.9 degrees on May 23, 2013. Speculations are rife that the summer of 2019 could witness the temperature being surpassed in the next couple of days. Monsoon Prediction: Brace For Below Normal Rains This Year, Says Skymet Weather Forecast
The 47-degree mark, considered to be the benchmark of "extreme heat wave conditions", has been breached by Nagpur six times since 2003.
Chandrapur, meanwhile, was probably the "hottest city in the world" on Tuesday, as it recorded a temperature of 47.8 degree celsius.
Besides Chandrapur and Nagpur, highest temperatures in other districts of Vidarbha were Bramhapuri (46.9 degrees Celsius), Wardha (46.5), Gadchiroli (46), Amravati (45.8), Akola (45.6), Yavatmal (45) and Buldhana (45 degrees Celsius).
According to the Regional Meteorological Office, the heatwave is going to continue till May 31 and the temperatures may start receding from June 1.
A major respite from the heatwave conditions would come with the onset of Monsoon in Maharashtra. Though Vidarbha, along with Marathwada, received rainfall later as compared to western Maharashtra, the beginning of rainfall in neighbouring parts will have a cooling effect on the region's temperature.
According to the IMD, rainfall is expected to hit Kerala coast on June 6. The Konkan region in Maharashtra is likely to receive the first showers between June 15-17.
