Chandigarh, April 3: As part of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation’s cleanliness drive, as many as 45 challans of Rs 10,000 each were issued for littering in public spaces, reported The Indian Express. Meanwhile, for using plastic, around 40 challans of Rs 5,000 were also issued. The civic body started the drive on April 1, 2019, to crack down on people littering streets of the city. According to the report, most of those who were challaned for Rs 10,000 were owners of eating joints and multinational restaurants. Medical Officer of Health (MOH), Amrit Pal Singh told The Indian Express, “Most of the eating joint owners had stashed waste outside their building. Our sanitary inspectors were told that they should click pictures for their proof before handing out the challan.” Meanwhile, Most of the challans were issued in the Sectors 22, 23, 43, 44 and 35. The municipal corporation has also asked its staff members to create awareness among people of the city that they would be challaned if they litter in Chandigarh. Owners of pets will also be fined Rs 10,000 for not removing their faeces. According to the report, people can also appeal before the MOH if they feel that they have been fined unnecessarily. After the Drug Inspector Neha Shoree was shot in Mohali, officials who are out on challan drive will be given body cameras.
