Chandigarh Bans Firecrackers, Time Limit Imposed on Bursting Crackers on Diwali, Dussehra and Gurupurab

It has often been discussed how harmful crackers are to the health of people and peace of the society. Time and again demands have been made to ban or at least curb the use of crackers from the society. It has also been noticed that some people only wait for an occasion to burst crackers. But now Chandigarh is leading the way in showing a path to all the other cities in India. The Chandigarh administration has ordered complete ban on fireworks and crackers with immediate effect. A report in The Times of India said that the ban will be in effect till November 24. But Chandigarh, a union territory, has allowed limited relaxation in the ban on firecrackers on three occasions keeping the festive season in mind. However, the relaxation will be allowed only for three hours on Dussehra, Diwali and Gurupurab which fall on October 19, November 7 and November 23. On Dussehra, October 19, the relaxation will be in effect from 6.30 pm to 9.30 pm. On Diwali, November 7, the relaxation will be in effect from 6.30 pm to 9.30 pm and on Gurupurab, November 23, from 6.30 pm to 9.30 pm. Those violating the rule will be prosecuted under section 188 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The rule also makes it mandatory for the manufacturer of the firecrackers to give information about the chemicals and material used on the packaging. The quantity of chemicals used must be below the prescribed limits given by the explosives department.
