It is an eventful day on Friday for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). While the Supreme Court is set to take up CBI top boss Alok Verma's plea against him being sent on leave, the Opposition led by the Congress will protest outside the CBI Headquarters against the temporary removal of Verma.
Congress President Rahul Gandhi and other Congress leaders who were detained have now been released. "Eight leaders and 150 workers were detained for 20 minutes and then released," said DCP South Vijay Kumar.

There is chaos at the Lodhi Road Police Station where Congress President Rahul Gandhi has been taken. Congress supporters have followed the party chief and are trying to enter the police station in huge numbers. Senior Congress leaders are appealing to them to not create chaos.
Along with Rahul Gandhi, Congress leaders Ashok Gehlot, Pramod Tiwari and Raj Babbar have also courted arrest and are being taken to the police station in a police bus. Read more here.
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley speaks on CBI Turmoil: "The Supreme Court has further strengthened the fairness into the probe by setting a deadline and ordering a court-monitored CVC inquiry into the allegations against Alok Verma and Rakesh Asthana. It is a positive step. The truth must come out, that is in the largest interest of the country," he says.
The security personnel have shut the gates of the CBI Headquarters in Delhi as the Rahul Gandhi-led Congress protest reaches there. The entrance of the CBI HQ has been barricaded completely.
There is tight security at the CBI Headquarters in Delhi. Officials of the Delhi Police, CRPF, CISF are guarding the area outside the CBI Headquarters and there's heavy barricading as the Rahul Gandhi-led Congress protest marches towards the gates against CBI chief Alok Verma being sent on leave.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal reacts to Supreme Court order on Twitter. "Welcome intervention by the honourable Supreme Court of India in the CBI matter. In the interests of the nation, hope that institutional integrity of CBI will be upheld and powers that be will understand that their illegal acts will not unchallenged," Kejriwal tweets.
CJI Ranjan Gogoi states, "CVC will carry on the probe in 10 days under the supervision of a retired judge of this court. M Nageswara Rao shall perform only routine task. Change of investigating officer by CBI will be furnished in a sealed cover on 12 of November before SC."
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta says, "10 days may not be enough to complete the inquiry and opposes supervision of CVC inquiry by SC judge."
CJI Ranjan Gogoi in his order states, "Inquiry in respect of the allegation made in the note of the Secretariat as regards the present CBI Director Alok Verma shall be completed by the CVC within a period of 2 weeks from today. The inquiry will be conducted by the retired SC judge AK Patnaik." Meanwhile, Nageswara Rao will remain interim CBI chief till then.

The Supreme Court will hear the pleas filed by Verma and NGO Common Cause challenging his removal as the director of the Central Bureau of Investigation. The bench which would be adjudicating on the petitions is headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi.
Congress president Rahul Gandhi yesterday accused the government of "sacking Verma at 2 am in the night as he was about to begin a probe into the Rafale deal". Had the probe been initiated, "the PM would had been finished", he added.
The CBI, meanwhile, issued a clarification claiming that neither Verma nor Asthana have been removed of their charges. Both the top officials have been sent on a forced leave till the CVC adjudicates on the complaints registered against them.
