CBI Officer Tarun Gauba, Probing Rakesh Asthana, Removed

A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) DIG Tarun Gauba who was supervising the probe against former Special Director Rakesh Asthana was removed from his post by the Prime Minister-led Appointments Committee of the Cabinet on Wednesday.

New Delhi, July 10: A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) DIG Tarun Gauba who was supervising the probe against former Special Director Rakesh Asthana was removed from his post by the Prime Minister-led Appointments Committee of the Cabinet on Wednesday. The decision was conveyed through an order issued by the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievance and Pensions. CBI Names its Special Director Rakesh Asthana as 'Accused No. 1' in Bribery Case Linked to Meat Exporter Moin Qureshi.

The notice read, “Approval of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) is hereby conveyed for the premature repatriation of Tarun Gauba to his state cadre.” Gauba, a 2001-batch IPS officer from Uttar Pradesh cadre was assigned as the in-charge of the team constituted to probe corruption allegations against Asthana last October. CBI Interim Director M Nageshwar Rao Reverses Transfer Orders Issued by Former CBI Chief Alok Verma.

Nitin Wakankar, Chief Information Officer of the CBI said, "Tarun Gauba’s tenure in CBI was up to October 2019, and he has been selected for the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship beginning in August in the US." He further added that  Gauba has been repatriated to his parent cadre, from where he will proceed on the scholarship.

Gauba was appointed by former CBI Additional Director M Nageswar Rao to supervise the probe against Asthana. He had also probed Vyapam cases, has been sent back to his cadre, according to a government order. Meanwhile, Rao was shunted out of the CBI last week. He was then appointed as Director General (DG) Fire Services, Civil Defence & Home Guard.
