New Delhi, October 23: The Special CBI Court on Monday granted the agency a 7-day custody of Devender Kumar, the CBI's Deputy SP chief, held in the bribery case linked to meat exporter Moin Qureshi.

Special CBI Judge Santosh Snehi Mann was told by the CBI counsel that the agency has recovered incrementing evidence against Kumar, indicating his role in the forgery racket run by a section of agency officials under the garb of investigation. CBI Turf War: Delhi High Court Refuses to Stay Proceedings Against Rakesh Asthana, But Says No Arrest Till Oct 29.

Kumar was arrested on Monday, based on the statements recorded by Satish Sana, an accused in the Moin Qureshi case. Sana, a Hyderabad-based businessman, has accused him of seeking a bribe of Rs 3 crore.

Apart from Kumar, the FIR registered by the CBI also names Rakesh Asthana, the incumbent Special Direction of the central probe body.

Earlier in the day, the Delhi High Court ordered the CBI to not to arrest Asthana till October 29, when it would be hearing his petition seeking the quashing of the FIR against him.

Asthana's counsel told the HC bench that his client is being framed by someone "who is himself an accused" in the Moin Qureshi case.

"This is a case of illegal registration of FIR against CBI Special Director based on a statement of an accused," advocate Amarendra Sharan told the bench of Chief Justice Rajendra Menon and Justice V Kameswar Rao.

"This matter is of great urgency. The person whose arrest was recommended by Asthana has now been made a complainant and based on his complaint this FIR has been filed. Any investigation without proper permission will be illegal," Sharan further added.
